World History I
Course Syllabus
World History I: Pre-History Thru The Middle Ages
Course Goal- to provide students with a world perspective of events and enable students to critically analyze and discuss these concepts at an in-depth level.
Grades- Grades are based on total number of points earned in a grading period. These include homework, quizzes, papers and other forms of writing, class participation, and projects. Participation in discussion is an important element. Students should check their grades regularly on Teacherease, and if there is any question about a grade see the teacher ASAP.
GRADING SCALE: District Scale
Homework- all students are expected to keep up with the readings (both textbook and outside articles); this material is essential in order to be able to carry out class discussions. Occasionally, students may be asked to complete written assignments or worksheets that cover the readings. Any work turned in with no name will be given an automatic zero. Students will need a 3 ring binder for the course.
Cell Phones- Students will store all cell phones at the beginning of class in the class cell phone containment area. No phones will be on their person. If a need for phone use arises, phones will be able to be taken from the phone containment area.
Projects- students will have both individual and group projects which will need to be completed for the course. Failure to participate in these group activities or excessive disruption during a class project will result in an F for the project. If a student misses a number of days during a group project, an alternative project will be assigned to that student.
Late work- If a student is absent they have the responsibility to make up the missed assignments. They will have as many days as they were absent to turn in the work. If the work is not turned in by then it will be a zero. If the student was present when the assignment was given and absent when it was collected, the assignment is due when the student returns to class. Late work will be graded at 50% and students will have one week to turn it in. After that week late work will not be accepted. Students can stay up to date by checking the website.
Semester Exam- covers ALL semester work. Relies heavily on notes and old quizzes.
Room 14 Guidelines
1. Be Prepared for class and in your seat when the bell rings (students will NOT be allowed to leave the room once the bell rings).
2. Turn off all cell phones and put them in phone containment area. If they can be used in class the instructor will let you know.
3. NO food or drink (other than H2O in a clear bottle) allowed in the classroom. We will address gum issues as they arise.
4. Do Not place feet on desks or sit on top of desks. If fans are in use, please do not move or touch. If there is a problem, please let me know. Please do not doodle on desks (paper for this can be supplied—just ask).
5. When having a discussion, students are expected to LISTEN to other students and respect their opinion (even if they disagree with it). Do NOT place head on desk unless ill—then you may go to the Nurses office and be sent home.
6. WAIT to be called upon before voicing your opinion. Raise your hand and wait for recognition.
7. RESPECT those in class- whether it is a fellow classmate, teacher, guest speaker, student teacher, parent, etc. Avoid inappropriate, ignorant, or unenlightened comments.
8. Use your time wisely. If my lecture ends early, check the assignments on the board. If not my assignment, students are expected to be working on schoolwork- not engaging in excessive small talk or napping.
