History 101/102 Course Syllabus
Parkland Dual Credit Course: History 101 (1st semester) is a course in which students get both high school credit and college credit (4 hours). As such, it is a more demanding course than a regular world history course. It is reading and writing intensive and will require about 5-10 hours of work per week outside of class (on average).
Grades are based on total number of points earned in a grading period. These include (but are not limited to) the following. If there is any question about a grade see the teacher ASAP.
Chapter Outlines (formal outline- with details; will be used during discussion; must be complete before the chapter begins; chapter one example by instructor; chapter two done as a small group activity; chapters 3-12 will be done by individual students; chapter outlines will be multiple pages long and must be in the correct format.
Response papers- 3-5 pages typed, double-spaced paper that addresses a particular topic from the chapter. Outside sources are permitted but must be identified in the body of the paper. No works cited is required. Your response should show an understanding of the material presented within the text, outside resources, and independent thinking. Needless to say "NO PLAGARISM!!" If you paste and copy more than 1 sentence from an article you have found- it is toooo much. If you don't understand what I am referring to- just ask. The wholesale copying of a article for your use in a paper will result in a zero for the paper and possibly an F in the class. If any doubts, ask.
Group Presentations and discussions- Each group will present a chapter on a rotating basis and given an oral presentation on a topic from the chapter; after providing a detailed view of the topic, the class will be engaged in a question/answer session. Students are expected to ask questions of the presenters and presenters should be able to answer questions. A brief summary paper will be submitted by the group prior to the presentation for the class to view prior to the presentation (this is not a word for word script of the presentation- just an overview). Students are expected to speak to the class- not read documents. IF there are any questions, ask prior to the presentation.
Article Analysis- Students will be given articles to read and write brief but detailed and concise summaries of the article along with a conclusion that presents their opinion on the topic. These are typed and should be no longer than one page double-spaced.
Small Group Activities- (SGA)- over the course of the semester, students will do a number of activities in their assigned groups; work should be shared equally and groups need to be able to work out differences and get their jobs done. Activities will vary.
Class Participation- points for participating in activities over the course of the semester; mostly individual work;
One final- format to be determined(100 pts)
GRADING SCALE: District Scale (90-80-70-60)
Materials needed for Class: 3-ring binder and loose-leaf paper or notebook and folder; blue or black pen;
Text: A History of Western Society by McKay, Hill, and Buckler (9th edition). All books are college texts and run approximately 130 dollars. Students who lose the text or damage will replace the book. The course will also include a number of primary source articles and other academic articles.
