Psychology Syllabus
Course Goal- to provide students with a general knowledge of the basic concepts of psychology and the opportunity to discuss, experiment, and experience these concepts. This class will enable students to critically analyze and discuss these concepts at an in-depth level and explore their interests in the field of psychology.
Grades- Grades are based on total number of points earned in a grading period. These include homework, tests, quizzes, projects, class readings and responses, and class participation. Participation in discussion is an important element of this course. If there is any question about a grade see the teacher ASAP.
GRADING SCALE: District Scale
Materials needed for Class: A 3-ring binder (for psych only); blue or black pen;
Homework- all students are expected to keep up with the readings (both textbook and outside articles); this material is essential in order to be able to carry out class discussions. Occasionally, students may be asked to complete written assignments or worksheets that cover the readings.
Participation- all students are physically expected to participate in class; this includes hands on activities and class discussions
Projects- students will have both individual and group projects which will need to be completed for the course.
Cell Phones- Students will store all cell phones at the beginning of class in the class cell phone containment area. No phones will be on their person. If a need for phone use arises, phones will be able to be taken from the phone containment area.
Late work- If a student is absent they have the responsibility to make up the missed assignments. They will have as many days as they were absent to turn in the work. If the work is not turned in by then it will be a zero. If the student was present when the assignment was given and absent when it was collected, the assignment is due immediately when the student returns to class. Work received late(due when teacher collects assignment) will be penalized 50% and students will have 5 class days to turn it in. After that, late work will not be accepted. Students can stay up to date by checking the website and Teacherease.
Tests consist of multiple choice, matching, short answer, and essay questions.
Semester Exam- covers ALL semester work. Relies heavily on notes and old tests/quizzes.
Room 14 Guidelines
1. Be Prepared for class and in your seat when the bell rings (students will NOT be allowed to leave the room once the bell rings).
2. Turn off all cell phones and put them in phone containment area. If they can be used in class the instructor will let you know.
3. NO food or drink (other than H2O in a clear bottle) allowed in the classroom. We will address gum issues as they arise.
4. Do Not place feet on desks or sit on top of desks. If fans are in use, please do not move or touch. If there is a problem, please let me know. Please do not doodle on desks (paper for this can be supplied—just ask).
5. When having a discussion, students are expected to LISTEN to other students and respect their opinion (even if they disagree with it). Do NOT place head on desk unless ill—then you may go to the Nurses office and be sent home.
6. WAIT to be called upon before voicing your opinion. Raise your hand and wait for recognition.
7. RESPECT those in class- whether it is a fellow classmate, teacher, guest speaker, student teacher, parent, etc. Avoid inappropriate, ignorant, or unenlightened comments.
8. Use your time wisely. If my lecture ends early, check the assignments on the board. If not my assignment, students are expected to be working on schoolwork- not engaging in excessive small talk or napping.
